A Mother’s Day to Remember: An Italian-Inspired Lunch Full of Love and Little Joys

by Marla Fortier

Mother’s Day has always held a special place in my heart—but one year, in particular, still makes me smile every time I think of it.

That year, my daughter and sister had both recently welcomed sweet new babies, and I knew we needed to celebrate the moment with something meaningful, beautiful, and just a little indulgent. So, I hosted a cozy little Italian-inspired lunch at home—something simple, heartfelt, and filled with joy. It turned out to be one of my favorite Mother’s Days ever.

We didn’t hop on a plane to the Amalfi Coast, but it felt like we did.

I set the table with bright, cheery lemon centerpieces and used empty tomato cans as vases, stuffing them full of fresh parsley and basil. The scent alone could transport you to Nonna’s kitchen in a heartbeat. Everything about the table felt homey, sunny, and full of life.

The menu? Classic pasta dishes made with love—hearty, flavorful, and made to be shared. A fresh green salad, crusty bread, a chilled bottle of prosecco, and little bowls of olives and marinated artichokes completed the table. It wasn’t fancy, but it was perfect.

We sat outside, babies in arms, the sun gently warming our shoulders, and for just a little while, life slowed down. We laughed. We passed plates. We talked about motherhood, about the joys and the chaos, and about the beauty of being together in the everyday moments.

That day reminded me that the best gatherings don’t require perfection—just intention.

So this year, whether you’re celebrating yourself, your mom, your daughter, or your sister-friends, consider creating your own little Italian escape. Light a candle that smells like lemon and herbs, cook a pot of pasta with abandon, set your table with joy—and toast to the women who make life so beautifully rich.

Because sometimes, the most memorable vacations… happen right at home.
